Hello campers.  Great news!  The Board has hired a new Camp Director.  Her name is Mary Beth King and she’ll be joining us for the first part of camp this year.  She sounds wonderful and I know we’ll each do all we can to welcome her into our community.

I’ll be Skyping with her later today and am looking forward to getting to know her and introducing her to our amazing camp and community.

Big hugs from me and here’s the letter from the Board.

Dear Camp It Up! Staff and Community

We are excited to share with you the news that the future Executive Director of Camp It Up! has been selected. The Board conducted a national search to find the person to lead Camp It Up! into the future, after the long and loving tenure of founder/Director Jill Rose.  We, the board members, faced a difficult decision, as we had several strong candidates from our camp community.   Ultimately we selected Mary Beth King, who is new to Camp it Up! but has tremendous experience as a camp leader and is part of the larger LGBT community.  Mary Beth currently lives in South Carolina with her partner Melissa and has made plans to join us at camp this year.

We believe she is the person we are looking for to move Camp It Up! into the future as a strong non-profit organization!  We’re happy to share her resume with you, but here are some highlights:

  • Ten years of camp directing – Girl Scout Camps including creating manuals, hiring and training staff
  • Six summers  being  a group leader at an LGBTQ adult summer camp in Maine
  • Seven years of experience in Fund Development
  • She is warm, smart, funny, enthusiastic, and thoughtful about camp’s possibilities
  • She is a vegan baker and owned her own vegan bakery for two years
  • In Mary Beth’s own words, “as a long time camp professional, member of the LGBTQ community, and social justice activist, I am exceedingly excited to be considered for the position”

Mary Beth let us know that this is her dream job, and that yes, she would consider moving west if this job comes through.  You will have an opportunity to meet Mary Beth soon!  She is coming out to meet all of you during pre-camp training and set up, and she will be able to stay through Monday.  Mary Beth is very excited to meet all of you and the camp community, and begin to learn about the magic of camp.

We thank all of you, staff, campers and camper community, for your love of Camp It Up!, your financial and emotional support, your willingness to roll up your sleeves and get involved and your welcoming of all that is new while holding our traditions of Camp close to your hearts.

See you soon!

The Board of Directors of Camp It Up!
